After a great long weekend of football, our senior women’s team hit top spot for the first time this season!
Avalon WAL1’s travelled away for the much anticipated top of the table clash with Curl Curl on sunday. Before the game Avalon were 1 point behind an undefeated Curl Curl, however after the 90+ minutes a perfectly weighted free kick from Zara Harrison released the lightning fast Lily Faithfull who calmly slotted home the winner.
There were some tense moments for the Avalon back line in the closing 10 minutes, however another clean sheet for keeper Eve Robertson and the defence, ably lead by Jade Philip and Lara Haygarth, kept Curly at bay. The game ended with with Avalon nearly doubling their lead, with Annabel Ritchie unfortunately hitting the bar, but it did nothing to prevent a deserved win.
Not the prettiest of games from the dominant passing and possession style the girls play, due to the intense pressure applied by Curly, however the girls matched and overcome their opponent’s physicality.
Round 2 commences next sunday at home v Forest Killarney K.O. 1pm, with the WAL1’s keen to maintain their 9 game winning run. See you at The Bay….
