AVALON WELCOMES RETURNING PRESIDENT

Following Monday night’s AGM, Avalon Soccer Club is delighted to welcome John Kowtan back to the role of club President.

Kowtan, life member, 20 year committee member and President of the club for nearly a decade until 2018, served as Vice-President in 2020 and replaces Lee Gallagher who leaves the club following two years at the helm.

“I’m very proud to be given the responsibility as President again for this great club, and can’t wait to get going for season 2021.” JK said following the AGM.

“I also want to thank Lee for the fantastic job he did at the club across a tough couple of years, especially during this pandemic interrupted season. He led the club and it’s members with a calm assurance, navigated a season like no other, and can be rightly proud of his contribution to Avalon Soccer Club.”

Gallagher leaves the club proud of the resilience shown over the past 12 months.

“There were challenges this season, there is no doubt about that, however, we did get a football season in and I am thankful for that. It was great to see all the happy, smiling faces on the children and senior teams being able to get out on the field and play the game they love.”

“I would like to say a special thank to all the committee members and other volunteers who supported us as a club to make this season happen. Without you none of this would be possible. I leave knowing the club is in great hands and look forward to seeing it’s progress in future years.”

Kowtan an AIS product and former professional player with Brisbane City in the NSL and Reading FC in England, is confident that 2021 will be the start of a new era for Avalon.

“We have big plans for where we want to take this club over the next 5-10 years, and we have a vision of where we want to be, and create a whole club approach which unifies Juniors and Seniors. Over the coming weeks we’ll begin putting plans in place that will set up Avalon Soccer Club for the 2021 season and beyond. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be involved at Careel Bay.”

Mark Thain was elected as the new Vice-President of the club, the role vacated by Kowtan.  The club wishes to thank all 2020 committee members for their service in this difficult year, acknowledges those who aren’t returning, and welcomes the new faces on the committee.
